In Chinese Medicine the digestive energy also promotes the development of a healthy respiratory and immune system. The digestion is associated with the Earth element in 5 Element theory and it promotes the Metal element. The organs associated with the Metal element are the Lungs and the Large Intestine. Imbalances in these organs can result in conditions such as asthma, poor immunity and poor elimination. Skin disorders are also common signs of imbalance in these organs.
Children who are hyperactive or have difficulty regulating their moods can also benefit from Chinese Medicine. Issues with sleep may also be addressed. Chinese Medicine can help to strengthen the constitution of the child while eliminating pathogenic factors such as dampness, heat and cold which may contribute to emotional imbalance.
Depending on the age of the child acupuncture or acupressure may be used to help strengthen the digestive qi as well as the qi in other organ systems which may be compromised. Diet is also considered and suggestions are made according to Chinese dietary theory. Sessions are typically shorter for children and in younger children acupuncture needles are not usually retained. Acupressure is commonly used in lieu of needles for younger children. Chinese herbal formulas may also be suggested.
